![]() A recovered alcoholic and one-time war correspondent, he was attracted by the hypnotic effect the signs following service had on him and by the danger of handling four-foot rattlesnakes and deadly copperheads. ![]() ![]() Covington became caught up in the religion. After WW II the signs following cult came to insular places like Sand Mountain, Ala., where traditional life had been unsettled by the rapidly changing times. He wanted to observe firsthand the phenomenon known as ``signs following.'' The practice is based on the literal interpretation of Jesus' prophecy: ``And these signs shall follow them that believe.they shall speak with new tongues they shall take up serpents and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them.'' In order to fulfill the prophecy, believers worship with poisonous snakes, drink strychnine, and speak in tongues. Reporting for the New York Times on the case of Glenn Summerford, a snake-handling preacher who attempted to kill his wife with snakes, Covington (Lizard, 1991) attended a ``homecoming'' meeting at the Church of Jesus with Signs Following, Summerford's converted gas station church. ![]() ![]() A meandering journalistic testimony of the author's experience with a strange southern Christian sect. ![]()

Once he started talking about boondocking and RV parks, I was hooked. And before that, he traveled in a van he outfitted himself. He has also spent enough time on the road in his Airstream to earn the honorary full-timer title. ![]() I mean really, can you name one bad movie he has ever done? But McConaughey is more than the sum of all the characters he has become with every ounce of his being. Greenlights author Matthew McConaughey is a Hollywood icon. ![]() ![]() Did you know Matthew McConaughey was a fulltime RVer? Well, sort of. But most importantly, I found McConaughey to be one of those genuine, good-hearted souls. And as a long time fan, I was deeply intrigued by his autobiographical ramblings. I pondered the deep messaging in much of young Matthew’s poetry. Yes, I enjoyed all the insightful bumper sticker sayings. But that’s not the only reason I loved reading Greenlights. This is also a common theme in our book, Be More Dog: Learning to Live in the Now. Greenlights is enlightening, funny, and has one powerful punchline: Keep on Livin… Sure, it is part memoir, but also part poetry, and part playbook for livin’ the goodlife, with a bit of subliminal self-help thrown in for good measure. The new memoir by Matthew McConaughey is much more than that. ![]() ![]() ![]() However, I couldn’t help but feel that there was something missing in terms of the story and the way everything concludes left me underwhelmed. The most notable aspect of the novel by far is the eerie and unsettling atmosphere that the author creates, which was really well done. Hal is a sympathetic character and I cared about what would happen with her, so there was a connection I felt to the story throughout. I can’t say that this novel wowed me in any way, but I really enjoyed reading it. It sounded like just my kind of mystery, and even though I had not enjoyed the one other Ruth Ware book I had read previously ( I had really strong feelings about The Woman in Cabin 10), I thought that this one was worth a shot. ![]() It becomes clear that there are deeply buried secrets and something sinister at the centre of this inheritance.
